So out of insomnia induced boredom I decided to rank our prospects HF style (meaning using a number and a letter).

I want you to do it too using the same system bitches.

The number rating is where I see the players absolute top end of everything goes right. The letter is to represent the likelihood of them reaching this potential.

The ratings...

10. Hall of Fame (Iginla, MacInnis)
9. All-Star (Fleury, Kiprusoff)
8. 1st Line/1st Pairing/Full Time Starter (Tanguay, Suter, Vernon)
7. 2nd Line/2nd Pairing/1A Starter (Glencross, Regehr, Lemelin)
6. 3rd Line/3rd Pairing/1B Starter (Yelle, Gauthier, Brathwaite)
5. 4th Line/#7 Defenseman/Career Backup (McCarthy, Eriksson, McLennan)
4. Top AHLer (Kolanos, Piskula)
3. Regular AHLer (Laing)
2. ECHLer (Watt)
1. Waste of skin (Hugo Carpentier)

A. Guaranteed
B. May drop 1 number
C. May drop 2 numbers
D. May drop 3 numbers
E. May drop 4 numbers
F. Has no chance of reaching anything

I'm going to do this, but without the HF Boards gibberish.

Baertschi, Sven - will play in the NHL. Guaranteed top six forward, probable top three. Possible all-star. Just a very high hockey IQ, that translates to both offense and defense.

Gaudreau, John - Obviously size is an issue (that's what she said) but he might play in the NHL, and could follow a similar path as Theoren Fleury (hopefully without the rape and drugs) or Martin St. Louis (hopefully without the unconditional buyout). If he makes the NHL, top six forward for sure as he has no business being in the bottom six. Posesses the raw talent needed to become a potential star in this league.

Jankowski, Mark - best player from the draft in ten years' time? Doubtful but could be a poor man's Niewendyk. More of a natural scorer than playmaker. Could benefit from a career alongside Baertschi and/or Gaudreau. Don't know about his game much as I still haven't seen him play. Top six or bust.

Seiloff, Patrick - reminds me of previous big hitters drafted by the Flames, but not much else in the way of upside. Could top out as a second pairing defenseman, reminds me a bit of Cory Sarich.

Ramage, John - skating leaves something to be desired, but his positioning makes up for it. Probably won't be more than a #5-6 defenseman but has the leadership qualities which make me think he'll wear a letter on his jersey for whatever team he winds up playing for. Longshot for a long term NHL career.

Gillies, Jon - not sure if his current statistics are more of a result of team performance or personal performance, but it's nice to see that there's another viable goaltending prospect that the Flames have. May not be more than a 1B goalie (ie: Dwayne Roloson) but goalies are weird, and he might not blossom for ten years yet...

Brodie, TJ - I think he's already shown he has potential to play on a team's powerplay, and in the top four. Probably won't exactly be a top pairing guy, but won't be stuck on the bottom pairing for his entire career either.

Reinhart, Max - I think his ceiling is a #2/3 centre - think Craig Conroy, but without the smile.

Backlund, Mikael - I really think a year under Bob Hartley (or a year away from that mentally challenged redneck) might do wonders for his development. That said, he's only a year away from being the next Dustin Boyd.

Nemisz, Greg - He'll be a great third line RW sometime in the future.

Horak, Roman - He'll be a great third line LW/C/RW sometime in the future.

Irving, Leland - Despite the Boston debacle, and his less than stellar performance after returning to Abbotsford last season, I think he's the next starting goalie (either alone or as part of a tandem) for the Flames. Provided we can keep him, of course...

*Ramo, Karri - Had a couple decent seasons in the KHL, and can't wait for 2013/14 to see how he performs under the bright lights. Could be part of a decent tandem with Irving.

Aliu, Akim - will be the best agitator the team has had since Prust. I really think he's one of those guys who doesn't give a shit about the AHL -for him it's NHL or "who cares".

Culkin, Ryan - Bum. Won't have a career in the NHL.

Granlund, Markus - he'll either come over and wow everyone, or completely disappear into obscurity. He might have more value if we traded him to Minnesota.

Brossoit, Laurent - Potential bum. Seriously, I don't know how to evaluate goalies, so he might be the next Patrick Roy. Or Jim Carey.

Ferland, Michael - an enigma. Like his "big body presence" but don't like that he's not exactly talented. Probably tops out as a third line winger, if he makes the NHL.

Byron, Paul - Bum. Won't have a career in the NHL.

Wotherspoon, Tyler - Probable bottom pairing defenseman. 50/50 shot of that happening.

Kulak, Brett - He might be an NHL player. Or he might not. We shall see.

Ortio, Joni - Bum, career ended when he headed back to Europe.

Howse, Ryan - Is he even playing this season? Total fucking letdown, probably destined for some obscure Italian league.

Gordon, Coda - I like him because his name reminds me of Codes. That's all though, he probably never plays in the NHL.

Arnold, Bill - Third line centre, as soon as he graduates. Reminds me of Stephane Yelle.

DeBlouw, Matt - His name reminds me of Heywood Jablowme. Don't think he'll ever play in the NHL though. Unless he blows someone.

Lamb, Brady - Destined for a fantastic AHL career. Could be a possible 6/7 guy and/or regular callup in the NHL.

Breen, Christopher - Destined for a fantastic AHL career.

Bouma, Lance - Could call him "graduated". 3/4th line winger.

Bancks, Carter - Carlton Banks? lol. No NHL for him.

Eddy, David - Who? Yeah. It's going to stay that way too.

Wahl, Mitch - fat bastard, total bust.

Martin, James - Thanks for coming out.

Elson, Turner - Future goon. Needs to work on his skating though.

Cameron, Bryan - Serious project, if he can stay healthy. Probably should just go to college at this point...

Larson, Nick - who the fuck is this asshole?

My top eight:

1. Baertschi
2. Gaudreau
3. Brodie
4. Horak
5. Bouma
6a. Ramo
6b. Irving
7. Reinhart
8. Jankowski

You would be the last person that I'd expect to have to explain how stats aren't everything. :P

That said, I haven't really paid attention to the QMJHL this year (frankly not used to having prospects in that league that are any good), so my ranking of "bum" might be a little harsh, as I really haven't seen him play. If he's creating these offensive opportunities, then I concede. But if he's leeching off his teammates, then maybe he's a bum after all...

if he sustains a point per game pace for an entire season, it will be hard for me to ignore the stats.

I also like Ryan Culkin now, because he's "kind of a big deal"

Johnny Gaudreau article

Quote:
He needs the sauce off his pasta. He hates vegetables, the nutritionist at BC often scolding him for the lack of greenery in his weekly food journal. He favors Skittles and Mountain Dew and chocolate chip cookies. He giggles, often.

There is maturation that still needs to happen, which is one of the reasons Gaudreau’s family is fighting off the advances by Calgary to get him into the NHL. His father says he will play at least his junior season in Chestnut Hill, and perhaps his senior as well.

“He looks like he’s 12 and he still acts like he’s 12 sometimes,” Guy said. “He’s just finishing up puberty.

“Any player that’s played with him, in the locker room with him, will tell you that he’s still very young. He might be 19, but he’s still probably in the body of a 17-year-old boy.”

Let the kid sit and mature.. if the flames treat him like detroit does their prospects and lets him fully mature in the minors and crack the team at 22-23, this kid could be dynamite.. Give him a few years to adjust to the size issues in the A and if he can figure it out.. watch out.. anyone else see him in the WJC? he was johnny on the spot, and holy shit wheels..

Tonnes of hope for this kid, with the right mentoring, conditioning and seasoning.. the skys the limit.. id def agree with the 9/D rating on him, as he could be an amazing nhler or a mediocre ahler
