I have one now, but it's old. I want a new one. I want to spend around $200. No more than $250.

What I want:

Compact (fit in my shirt pocket or the front pocket of pants)
10+ megapixels
8x (or more) optical zoom
"Easy" setting for your average idiot (me)
More ettings for your above-average idiot (me after some learnings)

For example, I was looking at this one: http://www.futureshop.ca/en-CA/product/ ... 5cbc99en02
mostly because I have an earlier version of it, and I like it. Plus red makes it better, amirite?

I'm selling my Panasonic TM 700, but it's a Camcorder, with 14 MP for stills. But then it's more than 200.

I'm going to be shopping for a DLSR in several months, but something in the 1500 range.

Cnet has some decent camera reviews.

I did a bunch or research a while ago and came down to buying a Canon SD4500IS. when I bought it, I think it was just around 300... I see it is now 270 on futureshop.ca, so just a little above what you want to spend.

The quality I got out of a round of test shots around the city when compared to another two I had bought and returned and my old one (Canon S3IS) was impressive. my only real complaint is that it doesn't have a viewfinder so the screen is always on and it definitely puts it more in the point and shoot category, but it still has a decent amount of features for something so small.

it is 10x optical zoom, 10MP, and easily fits in a pocket. slightly more bulky than a bb torch / iphone

So based off what everyone told me, I wound up getting the Canon PowerShot SX230 HS. Basically a beefier (in performance) version of the SD4500 (12 MP, 14x zoom) with GPS. Not too shabby for $280.

In my somewhat limited tests so far, I have found the "auto" setting more than acceptable, especially considering the camera will pick the right setting for the condition (after a second or two of analysis)

There's like 30-40 settings too, in case I get creative. I can also edit the images in-camera (ie: add sepia, black and white, color enhance, etc.) after I take them.

nice :)

my friend has the 210 and is very happy with it as well... just annoyed that the flash popup is right where you want to be holding the camera.

I'm saving for a Panasonic GH3. Not out yet, but should be by year's end.

I got a basic point and shoot Canon camera for a Christmas present for my girlfriend, and it seems to take nice photos. I don't remember off hand which model it was.
