I'm hardly in a mood to poke fun at the Oilers considering their recent record is better than ours, but Eakins is gone, MacT is in as interim coach.

Quote:
The Edmonton Oilers have fired head coach Dallas Eakins.
The Oilers are currently last in the Western Conference with 19 points with a 7-19-5 record so far this season.
General manager Craig MacTavish will take over the coaching duties on an interim basis.

So it's not MacTavish taking over as coach after all, it's the coach of their AHL Team (insert joke here)

Man I'd be pissed if I were an Oilers fan.

Their 1 win in the last 16 games is better than the Flames?

Que pasa?

I mean, I know the Flames are free falling and next up is a tough Ranger team, but we're nowhere near Oiler bad.

Well, they've won one of their last 5. I just figure it's just bad form to mock another team when your own team has lost 5 in a row.

They've also only won one of their last 16.

But yes, we're in our own glass house and should not hurl petrified wood.

Full article. It's 7 years old.

Quote:
Oilers' future looking bright

National Post ·

Attention Toronto Maple Leafs: If you must rebuild, then this is the way to do it.

The Edmonton Oilers are not going to make the playoffs this season. Even if leading scorer Shawn Horcoff, captain Ethan Moreau, power-play pointman Sheldon Souray and second-line winger RaffiTorres were not gone for the season, it would still be nip and tuck.

But the Oilers have made plenty of headway with their youngsters. Two players -- 20-year-old Andrew Cogliano and 18-year-old Sam Gagner -- are among the top six rookie scorers in the NHL, and Tom Gilbert is second among first-year defencemen.

While the rebuilding pain still lies ahead in Toronto, the medicine has been swallowed and the needle suffered in Edmonton. The biggest ache -- a two-year, injury-plagued hiatus from the playoffs -- will soon be behind them. It is unlikely the drought will stretch to a third year next season.

"You feel it in the room," Oilers head coach Craig MacTavish said. "I feel it and sense it, and normally if the coach feels it ? you're the last guy to feel the optimism of improvement.

"We're pretty positive about the outlook, with the group that we have here."

A year ago this team was a disaster, setting a team record for man-games lost to injury while losing 18 of its final 20 games. The luckless Oilers will break that injury mark again this year, but they have won six of their last seven games. That first-round draft pick that belongs to Anaheim -- thanks to the Dustin Penner signing last summer -- is getting worse by the day. The outlook for the future is only getting better.

The scouts have come through in Edmonton, both at the draft table and on the trade market. The Oilers acquired the smooth-passing Gilbert when they unloaded goaltender Tommy Salo four years ago. They picked up Robert Nilsson in the Ryan Smyth deal last spring. They added Denis Grebeshkov in a deal for Marc-Andre Bergeron last February, and the Russian defenceman is starting to become a player.

In goal, the Oilers rescued Mathieu Garon from obscurity, and he has laid claim to the starter's job with the 13th best save percentage in the league (and a whopping .938 save percentage in shootouts -- the best among NHL goalies who have faced more than six shots). Having the best shootout goalie doesn't hurt in the new NHL.

As it turned out, the two injury-marred seasons had a bright side.

"We were all given a great opportunity to play right away," Gilbert said. "We've been struggling so badly around here with injuries ... but for me, getting more games under my belt -- a little more experience -- it gave me a lot more confidence."

Nilsson, the 23-year-old son of former Calgary Flames star Kent Nilsson, had an eight-game scoring streak earlier this season and was trying to match that last night. "You can see his skill level," MacTavish said. "He could be the leading scorer on this team one day."

Gagner, whose father Dave scored more than 300 goals in the NHL, is just 18. He and Chicago's Patrick Kane were junior linemates on the London Knights. Cogliano played on two world junior teams with the Blackhawks' Jonathan Toews.

The four were texting each other before last Sunday's game, where Edmonton's kids out-gunned Chicago's 6-5 in overtime. After a nice start by Kane and Toews, Gagner, Cogliano and Nilsson grabbed the game by the throat, scoring three goals -- including the overtime winner -- in a game that just might have been a preview of the 2009-10 Western Conference final.

"It's pretty exciting that we're getting better, gradually, as a group," Gagner said. "The team as a whole likes to hang out together; we like to be around each other. And as the year has gone on, we have got a lot better, and that's starting to show now, too.

"We're building that foundation for the future: a great group of core guys, we're getting better as a team and enjoying every moment."

There will always be high-priced, big-name free agents on the market each summer, but the difference-makers for any organization today are the kids you draft. It is why the Leafs' turnaround appears to have a longer timetable. Toronto has locked itself into veteran free agents, partly because their drafting has been so poor and they have had to import their scoring.

Edmonton's first line includes Shawn Horcoff and Ales Hemsky, both drafted by the Oilers. Mind you, the third member is Penner, the free-agent who might be eternally overpaid at US$4.25-million per season. He will have averaged 25 goals over the past two seasons when this year is over. But he is still 25, it those 25 goals grow into 30, then perhaps GM Kevin Lowe will live down his controversial Group II signing.

And if the team wins, everything will be forgotten. It is hard to see the Edmonton Oilers staying south of the playoff line for long. "It seems like every year the Oilers are fighting for the last playoff spot. It's kind of become a trademark of the organization," Cogliano said. "Hopefully, with us young guys coming up, over the years we can start being a contender for the top spots."
