This is a done deal, apparently.

Quote:
The makeup of the yet-to-be-named four conferences is as follows:

* New Jersey, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, New York Rangers, New York Islanders, Washington and Carolina

* Boston, Montreal, Toronto, Ottawa, Buffalo, Florida and Tampa Bay

* Detroit, Columbus, Nashville, St. Louis, Chicago, Minnesota, Dallas and Winnipeg

* Los Angeles, Anaheim, Phoenix, San Jose, Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Colorado

Thoughts?

Weird I'd have thought Winnipeg would be in our Div. No room I guess. Unless you nerf the Avs. And what happens when Pho leaves?

This is actually really gay.

Top four teams from each conference make the playoffs. The problem? There are two 8 team conferences and two 7 team conferences. Guess what we have.

Yeah, we're getting fucked over here. This would only be fair if the league instituted some kind of CFL-like crossover rule (which would be awesome - Flames/Oilers in the Finals, anyone?), or added two teams to the league - Quebec City and somewhere else.

I have for years called bullshit when teams with 96 points miss the play-offs while we've seen teams with 89 points get in

Really, I am surprised the GM's are going for this, when a good half of them at least have been on the outside come play-off time only to see a team from another conference with fewer points get in.

Sorry I didn't examine this originallly and was looking at this as a new division alignment as opposed to 4 conferences.

the Lunatik playoff solution

contract the Blue Jackets and Coyotes... expand rosters to 25 players so the NHLPA cant cry like little bitches about lost jobs

have 2 conferences of 14 teams

play a home and home with each team in other conference (28 games)
play 4 games against teams in own conference (52 games)

top 8 teams in each conference miss the playoffs

none of this division heavy unbalanced schedule bullshit. every team in each conference gets the same opponents the same number of times

...............................

as for the new possible sked and playoff format, one positive is it will bring back old school playoff rivalries and that is a good thing

Def a good idea. I love how it's the Eastern teams that currently have 7 teams, Typical eastern favoritism.

Yeah, the East favouritism is annoying, as always.

We'll be in a 7 team division.

What strikes me is that the league currently has a format that is ideal for a 30 team league. The setup that it's moving to is inherently unbalanced with 30 teams, but would be ideal for a 32 team league. That makes me think that Bettman has something up his sleeves. He's always been opposed to moving teams, but he's quite clearly been keen on expansion in the past. Putting an expansion team in Quebec (and another city) rather than moving Phoenix there would seem to be the perfect solution

How long can they let this Phoenix Failure continue, though? If there was any other commissioner they would have been out of there years ago.

This.

Also, this all but ensures the Flames rebuild. Our "Conference" is one of the toughest with the likes of Vancouver, San Jose and the LA Kings. The Flames were successful in the 80's because they built their team to compete with the Oilers.

Also, I'm glad Winnipeg isn't in our division (I refuse to call them conferences) and I wish there was a Canadian team in all of the divisions.
